New Year, New Direction

Here we are, entering a new year. Are you creating a new project? Are you creating a new you? Resolutions are abundant. How often do the important ones really fly?

It’s easy enough to call a swimming pool and start a swimming class, and that even comes with accountability. It’s simple enough to call the gym and get a membership, or possibly start a new job. Sometimes, we fall off the bandwagon. There are a couple of things missing in these scenarios: future accountability and mindset change.

Mindset is sort of a buzzword lately. How do we change that without a coach and even with
a coach, does that really work? Think about the time when you had an automatic response you really didn’t need. My teacher, Shirzad Chamine, has a scenario he talks about in which he is at a retreat. Every meal is provided for, beautiful and abundant and buffet style. There is always more than enough and repeat with choices and flavor. After the meal, two hours are provided for free time or contemplation before any scheduled events.

One day, Chamine stood in line and waited impatiently. “Why am I waiting so impatiently?” wondered Chamine. “For certain, the food will not run out, and I am not even hungry, and I am not in a hurry at all.”

Chamine instead began to notice his breath, the rising and falling of his chest or stomach, and the nearby butterflies and the smell of the flowers in the air. The ephemeral is so lovely and creates the essence of beauty in our lives in between the hustle that we provide ourselves, and so much of that beauty is there when we are worrying about something that is in our head and not even real.

When we are in the mindset of flow and ease, rather than the mindset of expectation that others covet our food, our home, our money, our prestige, or our time, we support abundance. We nurture the environment for it. We don’t thwart it.

As for accountability, we attract partners for accountability, just by our sheer glow of prosperity. Our mindset also leads us naturally to them. Good thing, because those gym classes don't last forever nor do they call home when you play hookey

So, what will you do with your one wild and wonderful life? Will you start now? Do you have healthy accountability? Will you get a coach?

How about just a pledge to yourself to care for your mental hygiene today? What’s happening in your epic journey? Keep a journal! Let me know in the comments.
